Knowing the trees

How long can I keep the trees before planting them?

  1. After receiving your order, you can keep your plants for 48 hours in a cool, dark place in their packaging.
  2. You can also place them in a bucket, add soil and keep them moist without flooding the potting mix.
  3. Keep them outside; they will be happy in these conditions until you plant them in their final habitat.

When can I plant my trees and shrubs?

Our plants are hardy. From a very young age, they are grown outdoors on our production beds. They are already acclimatized to normal outdoor conditions. Therefore:

In spring

Even if the risk of frost has not passed, you can plant your seedlings, as long as the ground is thawed and you can work it.

In summer, during heat waves

  1. Take your plants out of their box and place them in a shady corner.
  1. Water them frequently so they don't lack water.
  1. Wait until conditions have returned to normal before planting them in the intended location.

In the fall

You can plant your plants as long as the ground isn't frozen. See here all the advantages of autumn planting.

How should I plant a tree?

Trees and shrubs are planted in the same way. Our advice also applies to conifers. For all the steps to successful planting, click HERE

Do not disturb the root ball when removing the plant from its pot. Normally, when plants are grown in containers, the soil clings to the roots. The root ball doesn't come apart easily, so it's easy to remove the plant from its container.

Do you have any advice on how to plant a hedge?

  1. Dig a trench twice as wide as the clod of earth, making sure the hole is deep enough.
  2. Incorporate and mix into the extracted soil, a base fertilizer for shrubs or leaf mold for conifers.
  3. Place the plants in the trench, respecting the spacing for the species.
  4. Fill with improved soil.
  5. Provide tutoring if necessary.
  6. Water each plant thoroughly at the end of planting and during the first year.
  7. For maintenance, prune after each growing season.

Once the tree is planted, how should I take care of it?

Watering
Water your newly planted trees regularly. A young tree must not lack water, especially in its first year.

Fertilizing young trees

To ensure optimal growth and maintain good vigor, annual fertilization with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer will adequately stimulate your young tree. It is therefore important to carefully follow the recommendations on the product labels to respect the dosage and choose a product suitable for the type of tree.

For more information, see Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs in Quebec

The size

  1. Do not prune your deciduous trees during their first year of planting and flowering. Formative pruning should begin in their second year after planting.
  1. When a branch is cut, a wound is created. For the wound to close quickly, the surface area must be as small as possible.
  1. It doesn't matter what angle you cut the branch from; the important thing is to be as close as possible to the beginning of the branch, without cutting the collar (where the branch grows).

Can I keep the tree I buy in a pot, indoors or outdoors?

Yes, but we recommend repotting it as it grows. If you keep a tree in a pot, you'll also need to water it more frequently.
